| 雖說誠實是一種美德，但有時候人家打電話來，要找的那個人正 忙得不可開交，而且是忙著一些難以啟齒的事情。例如忙著跟女朋友吵架、拉肚子、或是幫太太買內衣的話，我想你還是說得婉轉一點比較好："He´s tied up at the moment." 「他正有事要辦。」 |
| 對話 A：Hello. 甲：你好。 B：Hello. May I speak to Annie, please? 乙：你好，可以請安妮聽電話嗎? A：She´s tied up at the moment. May I ask who´s calling? 甲：她現在忙得很。請問是誰找她呢? B：This is Samuel. 乙：我是塞繆爾。 A：Would you like to leave a message? 甲：你要留個口信嗎? B：No, thank you. Just tell her that I called. I´ll call her later. 乙： 不用了，謝謝。告訴她我打過電話來就行了，我遲些會再給她電話。 有時候如果人家真的不方便接聽電話，你實話實說告訴來電者他正在跟女朋友吵架或拉肚子，既沒禮貌且有點尷尬。你只要說："He´s tied up at the moment."或是"He´s not available at the moment."這就可以輕鬆過關了。 |

| 他現在很忙 人家打電話來找某某，假如某某剛好去了廁所，一般不宜照實說：He is in /on the toilet.。英語國家的人認為這樣說頗為不雅，會改說：He´s not available at the moment.（他現在不能接電話。）、He´s tied up just now.（他現在很忙。）等。萬一非說廁所不可，最好也用washroom代替toilet。 Tie up是動詞片語 (phrasal verb)，指「（工作等）纏往」，例如：(1) The fax machine was tied up all afternoon.（傳真機整個下午都沒有空閒時候。） (2) The conference will tie me up for two days（會議將佔去我兩天的時間。）你可以忙得不能聽電話，也可以因為打電話而不能做其他事：He´s tied up on the phone and can´t see you now. 即「他正在講電話，不能見你。」He is tied up in a meeting just now. Can I ask him to call you back? 則是「他正在開會，請他回電話給你好嗎？」除了tie up，「忙著」也可以說to be engaged，例如：(1) He´s engaged on the phone and can´t see you now. (2) I´m afraid he´s engaged just now. Would you mind calling back a little later?（他現在很忙，你稍後再打電話來好嗎？） 留意engage之後用介系詞 (preposition) with是指「忙於某事」或「接待某人」，例如：She is engaged with a customer. （她正在招呼一位顧客。）切勿把with改為to：She is engaged to the boss即「她和老闆訂婚了」。 |
