| "The number you have dialed is busy, please wait for a moment." 聽下來是不是非常耳熟呢？沒錯，這是台灣某個電訊公司，當對方正在忙線中時，給你的留訊。所以你現在就會知道怎樣告訴人家電話正在忙線："The line is busy."「電話忙線中。」 |
| 對話 A：Hello. Front desk. 甲：你好，接待處。 B：Hello. Operator. As I was saying,this is rather urgent. Can you transfer me to Ext.205 immediately? 乙：喂喂，接線生。我已經說過了，這個電話很急的，馬上替我接去205號分機行嗎? A：I´m sorry. The line is busy. Please hold. 甲：我也想替你接，但對方仍在講話中，請等一下吧。 B：Can you try Ext.206 instead,please? 乙：那麼試試接去206吧! 麻煩你。 |

| 電話的基本詞彙 打電話，假如要接線生接駁，而另一端的電話線正在使用，無法接通，那麼接線生會告訴你：The line / number is busy. Busy是美式說法，英式是engaged。 電話有三種聲音信號不可不識。一是電話聽筒拿起時傳來的連綿不斷「胡胡」聲，美詞英文叫dial tone，英式叫dialling tone，表示電話隨時可用；電話接通了，但對方還未拿起聽筒，你會聽到悠長的鈴聲，那叫做ringing tone；電話因另一方正在使用無法接通，會發出短促的「嘟嘟」聲，美式英文叫busy tone，英式則叫engaged tone。Whenever I called her number, I got the busy tone. 即「我每次打電話給她，都只聽到無法接通的嘟嘟聲。」 此外，電話一些基本名詞也須認識。電話的聽筒叫handset或receiver，送話的一端叫mouthpiece，聽話的一端叫earpiece；放 聽筒的電話座凹處，叫cradle；電話座上舊式的號碼盤叫dial，新式的鍵盤叫keypad；用號碼盤的電話叫rotary dial telephone（旋轉撥號式電話），用鍵盤的則叫pushbutton telephone（按鍵式電話）。電話機之外，當然還要電話線(telephone cord)和電話線插座(telephone jack). A telephone will not work unless the telephone cord is plugged into the wall phone jack. 即「電話線不插進牆上電話線插座，電話就不能用。」 |
