| 假設你打了一個國際長途電話給國外的客戶，但是不知為甚麼， 他不是不在位子上，就是在忙線中。這個時候他的秘書可能會問你："Can I take a message?" 「我可以為你留話嗎？」但是你又覺得這是商業機密，不太方便直接留言，這時候你可以告訴他的秘書："Would you just tell him that I called, please?"「請你告訴他，我打過電話來就可以了。」然後留下你的姓名和電話號碼，不就是兩全其美嗎？ |
| 對話 A：Hello. This is the Baker residence. 甲：喂喂，這是貝克家。 B：May I talk to Mr. Baker, please? 乙：可以請貝克先生聽電話嗎? A：He´s not in, I´m afraid. May I ask who´s calling? 甲：對不起，他不在。是誰找他呢? B：Yes. This is Immy Ryan speaking. 乙：嗯，我是恩美萊恩。 A：May I take a message? 甲：我替你留個口信好不好? B：No, thank you. Would you just tell him that I called, please? 乙：不用了，謝謝。請你告訴他我打過電話來好嗎? A：Certainly, Miss Ryan. 甲：好的，萊恩小姐。 B：Thank you. 乙：謝謝。 劇中同事說："May I take a message?"「我可以為你留言嗎？」但是她斷然拒絕說："No, thanks. Would you just tell him that I called, please?" 裡面的這個"just"是個關鍵字，因為"just"只說為我做一件事情，那就是告訴他我曾經打電話來。但是如果人家根本沒有問你要不要留言的話，你也可 以自己問 "May I leave a message?"「我可以留個言嗎？」再把你想講的內容留下來，就大功告成了。 |

| 這是貝克的住所 貝克先生家人聽見電話鈴響，拿起聽筒說：Hello, this is the Baker residence.（這是貝克的住所。）來電者見貝克不在，沒有多說甚麼，但Hello, this is the Baker residence.一語卻值得談談。 英語國家的人接電話，有時一拿起聽筒就會自報戶主姓氏。Hello, this is the Baker residence.的懶惰說法是Hello, Baker residence. Baker是姓，姓名之前一般不用冠詞 (article) a, an, the，然則為甚麼說the Baker residence呢？按英文常用「the + 姓氏」來說「X家的」，那姓氏用法頗像形容詞。例如《咆哮山莊》作者Emily Bront和姊姊Charlotte Bront、妹妹Anne Bront都有文名，合稱為the Bront sisters。Of the Bront sisters, Emily was the most gifted. 即「布朗蒂姊妹之中，以愛蜜莉天賦最高。」同樣「蔣家兄弟」可以叫做the Chiang brothers。 說「布朗蒂一家」、「蔣家」等，英文可用同一法則：the Bront family, the Chiang family。例如：Today, the Chiang family has practically no political influence at all.（今天，蔣家政治上幾乎完全沒有了影響力。）此外英文還常常用「the + 複數形式的姓氏」來說某個家庭，例如：The Bronts / Chiangs used to live here.（布朗蒂一家 / 蔣家曾經住在這裡。）The Baker residence即「貝克一家的住所」，那Baker就是作形容詞用。 |
