| 在分秒必爭的城市生活，我們都知道「死線」是多麼重要的一件 事情。假如你的朋友或上司向你交托一件事情，尤其是重要的工作計劃或帳單，你都應該問他一句:"How soon do you need to have it done? 就是說「最快我需要甚麼時間裡完成?」 "How soon"這個問句並沒有指定的時段，你可以問的是三分鐘的化妝或是需時三天的合約，甚至是三個月或三年的工程。另外一些問法是："How much time do I have ?"「我到底有多少時間呢？」或者是："When is the deadline?"和"When is it due?"都是「最後期限是甚麼時候呢？」 |
| 對話 A：When you have finished typing,please make a card file of all our recent clients and color-code it. 甲：打完字之後，請你為最近的客戶開一個檔案，並用顏色把它們分類。 B： Certainly. How soon do you need to have it done? 乙： 好的。這件工作，你需要我在甚麼時候完成呢﹖ A： By tomorrow at noon, there is a meeting tomorrow afternoon at three and we might need it. 甲： 明天中午之前，因為明天下午三點鐘有一個會議，我們也許需要這些資料。 |

| 死線 你問上司：How soon do you need to have it done?（你要這工作甚麼時候完成呢？）上司說：I need to have it done in a couple of shakes. 你知道是甚麼意思嗎？按in half a shake, in a shake, in a couple of shakes都是in two shakes of a lamb´s tail的另一說法。「在小羊尾巴半搖 / 一搖 / 兩搖之間」，就是「轉瞬之間」的意思。你的上司是要你馬上把工作做好。他還可以說：I need to have it done in a jiffy / flash：a jiffy、 a flash同樣是說「一瞬間」。這些都是頗隨便的口語，較正式的說法是：I need to have it done immediately / (right) now.（我要馬上就做好。） 當然上司一般會給你長一點的期限，這期限大家都知道叫deadline，直譯是「死線」。美國內戰期間，戰俘營周圍會用鐵絲網豎立一條「死線」，戰俘越過死線，即格殺勿論。這個戰時用語，現在多借用來說工作，幸而工作上的死線沒有戰場上的那麼嚴酷。 要說自己須趕緊完成一件工作，你可以告訴同事：I have a very tight deadline to meet. 要說最後限期已屆，可以說I´m (right) down to the wire。Wire就是鐵絲網，down to the wire即「走到鐵絲網界定的死線了」。 但假如你實在無法如期完成工作，那只好請上司寬限：Could you possibly extend the deadline? 或 Could I have an extension of the deadline? |
