第6輯 第3課 I wonder if I can take this afternoon off.
商業社會的競爭愈來愈激烈，人手卻愈來愈缺乏，每天忙個不可開交，但有時候你也難免要請假。比較婉轉的說法是："I wonder if I can take this afternoon off." 「如果可以的話，今天下午是不是可以請假 ?」
除了前面跟大家說的：I wonder if I can take this afternoon off. 之外，你也可以很簡單說："Can I take this afternoon off ?"聽說德國有個報告指出只要辦公室？種點植物的話，可以把原本高達百份之十五的請假率降低到百分之五，不過我們還是保險先學好這句說話："I wonder if I can take this afternoon off."

A：Mr. Barkley, may I talk to you for a minute?
甲：巴里先生，我可不可以跟你談一會兒。
B：Sure, you can. Take a seat.
乙：當然可以。請進，坐吧。
A：I wonder if I can take this afternoon off. My sister has had an accident and is in the hospital.
甲：可以的話，我想下午請假。因為我的姐姐遇到意外，入了醫院。
B：I´m sorry to hear that. Yes, you can.
乙：哦，聽到這個很抱歉。你可以請假。
A：Thank you very much.
甲：非常謝謝你。
休假
Off作副詞(adverb)用，可指休假。這個字無論是上課的學生還是上班的男女都會用到，有些常用說法不能不識。
「你一年有二十一天假期。」可說：You are entitled to 21 days off a year.「我想下星期放假一天。」可說：I should like to take a day off next week.「今天我放假。」可說： I am off today. 或 It is my day off today.「他今天因病請假。」，則可說He is off sick today.
「休假」 的名詞是leave。上述用off的說法，可用leave改寫如下：
(1) You are entitled to 21 days´ leave a year.
(2) I should like to take a day´s leave next week.
(3) I am on leave today.
(4) He is on sick leave today.
Leave作名詞用本來是「准許」的意思，現在這個意思的leave仍見於嚴肅的場合，例如I was given leave to address the conference. 是「我獲准在會議上致詞。」休假一般都要獲得批准，所以leave後來也解作「休假」，而to be absent without leave就是「未獲批准而缺席」的意思。
Take leave（請假）是誰都不免的，但切勿take French leave（法國式請假）。從前法國上流社會聚會，出席者要中途離去，根據禮法不必告訴主人家。所以，to take French leave等於「擅自休假」。You could be sacked for taking French leave!（擅自休假，可能被炒魷魚！）
