| 朋友最近常跟我抱怨工作壓力非常大，為甚麼呢？因為老外老闆 常說："It´s pressing. It´s urgent." 後來發現他事無大小總是說："It´s urgent. It´s pressing." 然而哪有每天發生這麼大的事情呢？所以下次等到你有幾件事要交待，你應該說清楚："This one is pressing, but the other one can wait." 「這個真的很緊急，但是其它真的可以等。」 |
| 對話 A：How soon would you like to have them done? 甲： 這件事你想甚麼時候做好呢﹖ B：Well, this one is pressing, but the other one can wait. 乙：嗯，這件事很急，但另一件還可以等一等。 A：When is this one due? 甲： 這件事需要在何時完成呢﹖ B：Tomorrow afternoon. 乙：明天下午。 A：Oh, that´s impossible. 甲：啊，這是不可能的。 B：I understand, but could you please squeeze it in somewhere? 乙： 我明白，但可不可以請你把它安插進去，在其他地方撥點時間出來呢﹖ 前面的章節曾經教過大家："How soon do you need to have it done?" 「你希望在多短的時候能夠完成這件事情？」在這裡又再重新出現了。 但我相信像這樣緊張大師型的老闆，不管甚麼事情都會告訴你："It´s urgent. It´s pressing." 這很緊急、要趕快做完，這個時候在你別無選擇的情況之下，其實你可以認真問問你的老闆："Which one is the most urgent?" "Which one is the most pressing?"「哪一件事情是最緊張的？哪一件事情要最快完成的呢？」 |

| 須先處理的事 Press有「緊迫」的意思，例如Time presses是「時間緊迫」。Pressing作形容詞用就是「緊迫的」；This matter is pressing, but the other one can wait. 即「這件事很急，另一件則可等等。」The board of directors met to discuss the pressing issue.即「董事會開會討論這個緊急問題。」 要說某事比其他的重要，英文還可用precedence（優先）一字，以下是三個precedence的常用句式： (1) This matter has / takes precedence over the other.（這件事比另外那件重要。） (2) This matter should be given precedence.（這件事須優先處理。） (3) The tasks should be handled in order of precedence.（這些工作須按其重要性依次處理。） 另一個說「優先」的字，讀者大概都認識：priority。這個字的意思、用法和precedence大致相同，例如可以說：This matter has / takes priority over the other. This matter should be given priority. The tasks should be handled in order of priority. 不過priority還可作可數名詞 (countable noun)，指「優先的事」，precedence卻不可以。This matter is a first priority.（這件事必須優先處理）一語，就不能改用precedence這個字。 此外，to be first on the agenda或at the top of the agenda（待辦事項表上排第一）也是「比其他事項都重要」的意思，例如：The matter is first on the agenda.（這件事須首先處理。） |
