第9輯 第3課 I stayed up all night.
現在要教大家一句是「我一夜沒睡。」但是沒有睡覺是有選擇性 和沒有選擇性的。沒有選擇的叫做失眠，你可以說："I couldn´t sleep."「我沒有辦法睡覺。」或是"I have insomnia."「我有失眠的問題。」今天要教大家一句："I stayed up all night."「我整夜都沒有睡覺。」整夜不睡覺在幹甚麼呢？你可以在上網、工作、跟朋友打電話聊天，這是有選擇性的。
甚麼人喜歡一夜不睡呢？除了夜貓之外，還有遲睡鬼。還記得有一部由George Clooney主演的一部電影"From dusk till dawn"這個"dusk"是「日落」的意思；"dawn"則是「日出」的意思。所以你一夜未睡的話，你也可以說："I stayed up from dusk till dawn."此外還有一個說法是："I stayed up until daybreak." "Daybreak"是指「日出破曉時分」。

對話
A：What time did the party finish last night?
甲：昨晚的派對在甚麼時候結束?
B：Almost one o´clock in the morning. We had a great time.
乙：差不多在零晨一點鐘，我們都玩得很開心。
A：Oh, how about your homework? We have to hand it in today.
甲：噢，你的習作怎麼樣? 我們今天 要交了。
B：Don´t worry. I stayed up all night to finish it. It´s on the table.
乙：不用擔心，為了完成它我整晚沒有睡覺。習作就在桌子上。
A：Cool.
甲 ：真棒。
終夜長開眼
唐朝元稹有《遣悲懷》詩悼亡妻：「惟將終夜長開眼，報答平生未展眉。」終夜長開眼，英文怎麼說？
英文說法是not sleep a wink或not get a wink of sleep。Wink即「眨眼」，作名詞、動詞都可以，例如：
(1) The lass winked at me.（那小姑娘向我使眼色。）
(2) I did not sleep a wink last night. （我昨夜完全沒有睡過。）
這裡說的不眠，可能是睡不著，也可能是強睜著眼睛熬夜工作等。
「熬夜」還可以譯做stay up。To stay up late、to stay up till midnight ,to stay up all night. 即「夜深才睡」、「半夜才睡」、「徹夜不眠」，例如：I stayed up late to see the New Year in. （我等到深夜新一年來臨，才上？睡覺。）
此外，你還可以burn the midnight oil，這直譯是「半夜燒燈油」，意思當然就是「熬夜工作」或「開夜車」，例如：With the examination approaching, he had to start burning the midnight oil.（考試快來了，他開始要熬夜讀書了。）
最後不妨談談英文一個奇怪現象：有些動詞可以和它們的名詞連用，例如to sleep a good night´s sleep（睡一夜好覺），to live a comfortable life（過舒適的生活）、to die a peaceful death（死得很安詳）等，直譯成中文就是「死一個安詳的死」，「睡一夜的好睡」之類，似乎有點疊？架屋，但都是英文的慣用法。
