第9輯 第11課 Is there anything I can do for you?
有時候如果我們發現身邊的好朋友、同事、家人受到委屈，還是有難言之忍，最好的慰問是表示如有需要，你隨時願意效勞："Is there anything I can do for you?"「有什麼事情我可以為你做的嗎？」
"Is there anything I can do for you?"「有什麼事情我可以幫到你？」可說是屬於「雪中送炭」的一種。其他的說法有："Do you need a hand?"「需要幫手嗎？」或者有一句很棒的："You name it, I´ll do it for you."「只要你說得出來，我就可以幫得到。」或者"Let me know if I can help."「讓我知道，如果你需要幫忙的話。」
對話
Ａ：Is there anything I can do for you?
甲：我有甚麼可以為你做的?
Ｂ：Yes, please.
乙：哦，有呀。　
Ａ：What is it ?
甲：甚麼?
Ｂ：Please leave me alone. Otherwise, I will never finish my work.
乙：請讓我清靜一下。否則，我永遠也不能完成我的工作。
要我幫忙嗎？
見人家有困難，可以幫忙的話不妨問問：Can I be of any help / assistance?或Can I be of help in anyway? 或Perhaps I can help in some way?（有甚麼我可以幫忙的嗎？）這樣，最少表達了對人的關懷。If you need me, call.（要我幫忙的話，打電話給我好了。）I´ll always be there for you. / I´ll go to bat for you anytime.（我隨時可以效勞）等。
Go to bat for是美國俚語。這個bat不是指蝙蝠，而是棒球（baseball) 界常用的動詞，指用棒打擊，這裡引申解作「行動」，to go to bat for somebody即「為某人出力」，to go to bat against somebody則是「做事反對某人」。
你問人家要不要幫忙，不料人家只求你做一件事：Please leave me alone otherwise, I will never finish my work.（請不要打擾，否則我永遠沒法做完工作。）那真使人有點難堪。無論如何，這兩句的otherwise一字值得談談。
Otherwise即「否則」，是個連繫副詞 (linking adverb)，可以用在兩個子句 (clause)之間，前面用逗號 (comma) 或分號 (semicolon) 都可以。此外，otherwise還可用來起句。換言之，以下三個寫法都正確：
(1) Be quick. Otherwise, you´ll be late.
(2) Be quick, otherwise you´ll be late.
(3) Be quick; otherwise you´ll be late. （快點，否則你會遲到。）
