| 當你打電話老是找不到一個人，我相信總是有理由的。第一，他可能真的不在； 第二，他借了錢不想還；第三，他可能想跟你分手。所以對方會跟你說： "He´s not in at the moment."「他現在不在。」 |
| 對話 A：Hello. May I speak to Professor Williams, please? 甲：可以請威廉斯教授聽電話嗎? B：He´s not in at the moment, but he should be back soon.May I take a message? 乙：他剛好不在，但很快就會回來。我替你留個口信好不好? A：No, thank you. I´ll try again later. 甲：不用了，謝謝。我會再給他電話。 "He´s not in at the moment." 裡面的 "not in" 也就是 "out" 的意思。所以你也可以說："He´s out at the moment." 「他現出去了。」但像我剛剛講，不能聽電話是有很多原因的。他可能真的不在，或是他在，但是沒有辦法聽電話。也許你會聽到這樣的回答： "He´s around but he´s not at his desk now."「他雖然在，但是不在座位上。」 |

| 他現在不能接電話 要告訴來電者他要找的人不在家，一般說：I´m afraid he´s not in just now.（對不起，他現在不在家。）就可以了。但是在辦公室，要告訴來電者某某未能接電話，措辭可不能一成不變。 首先，假如來電者要找的人只是走開了一會兒，你可以說：He´s stepped out for lunch.（他外出吃飯去了。）、He´s not available just now.（他現在不能聽電話。）、He´s not in right now.（他出去了。）、He´s not at his desk at the moment.（他現在不在案前。）、He has some visitors now.（他現在有客人。）Just now、right now、at the moment、now等都是「此刻」的意思。這些句子都有「不久就回來」含義，人家不久自然會再打電話來。 但假如來電者要找的人當天不會回辦公室了，你就應清楚說明，以免對方當天再打電話來，彼此浪費時間。你可以說：He´s left for home.（他回家去了。）、He´s off today.（他今天放假。）、He´s off sick today.（他今天病了，不能上班。）、He´s on vacation.（他正在休假。）、He´s away on a business trip.（他出差去了。） 此外，最好告訴來電者他要找的人甚麼時候回來，例如：He´ll probably be back by two o´clock. （他大概兩點鐘就回來。）、He´ll be back on 26 June.（他六月二十六日會回來。）、I´m not sure of the exact date, but it will be sometime next week.（我不清楚確實哪一天，總之是下星期。） |
