| 在公眾地方，難免有很多機會要跟別人坐在一塊。在你要坐下之前，你應該很有禮貌地問人家："May I sit here?"「我可以坐在這裡嗎？」 除了"May I sit here?"之外，你也可以問人家："Is this seat taken?"「請問這個位子有人坐嗎？」如果你旁邊的位子是空的，但這個人剛好離開，你可以回答："Sorry, this seat is occupied."或是"This seat is taken."或是你看到這個人的旁邊明明是空的，但是他卻把行李袋放在上面，你就可以跟他說："Would you mind moving your bag so that I can sit down."「請把你的袋子拿開好嗎？這樣我就可以坐下來。」 |
| 對話 A：May I sit here? 甲：我可以坐在這兒嗎？ B：Sorry, the seat´s occupied. 乙：對不起，座位已被佔用了。 A：Why can´t you move your luggage off the seat? 甲：你不能拿走你的行李嗎？ B：I wish I could, but it doesn´t belong to me. 乙：我也想啊，但它不是屬於我的。 |

| 我坐在這裡好嗎？ 你在餐廳裡吃飯，有陌生人走來問：May I sit here?（我可以坐在這裡嗎？）你可以說：Yes, sure.（當然可以。）假如對方改一個方式問：Would you mind if I sit here? 你可以說：No, please do.（不介意，請坐。） 但座位如須留給還未到達的朋友，你就應該說：I´m sorry, I´m waiting for / expecting someone else.（對不起，我在等另一個人。）或My wife / friend will be along shortly.（我的太太 / 朋友快要來了。）或Another party will be sitting here.（這裡會有人坐。）又假如座位本來就有人坐，只是那人剛好去廁所，你可以說：I´m sorry, the seat is taken / occupied. 在酒吧裡，假如有人想跟你交朋友，問May I join you?（我可以和你一起嗎？）你答應的話，可以說Sure（當然可以）；不想的話，則可以說：I´m seeing someone else.（我約了別人。）或直接告訴他：I´m not interested.（我沒興趣和你來往。）、You´re not my type.（你不是我喜歡的那型。） 在公車或火車上，有些缺德鬼看著別人站在那裡，自己卻大模大樣把東西放在身旁座位上。見到那些人，你不必客氣，可走上前說：Can I have this seat?（這個座位給我好嗎？）或Would you mind moving your things / luggage?（可以把你的東西 / 行李拿走嗎？）留意「行李」英式英文叫luggage，美式則叫baggage，都是不可數名詞 (uncountable noun)。 |
