| I´m afraid I don´t understand.（對不起，我不懂），這裡的I´m afraid不是表示「我恐怕」的意思，而是代表「對不起」的意思。這句話無論你真的不懂或是假裝不懂都可以用，例如：老闆對你說話，你聽不懂或聽不清 楚，可以說I´m afraid I don´t understand.（對不起，我不懂，可否再說一遍？），或者你覺得話中有話，也可以說I´m afraid I don´t understand. 請別人講明真正來意。為什麼要加上I´m afraid 呢?雖然I´m afraid在這裡等同I´m sorry 的意思，但聽起來I´m afraid卻比I´m sorry客氣一點，間接一點。此外，如果沒跟得上別人的說話也可以說I´m not with you. / I don´t follow you. / I´m not getting this. 意思都是「我不太懂你的說話」的意思。 |

What´s happened? 乙：對不起，我不明白你的意思。發生甚麼事？ A:The board of directors has decided to invest in a new factory in Mainland China. I recommended that you be the unit manager there. | 集合名詞和中國大陸 The board of directors has decided to invest in mainland China. （董事會決定投資於中國大陸）一語，動詞為甚麼是單數形式的has decided而不是複數的have decided?答案似乎很簡單：因為這一句的主詞 (subject) 是board，不是directors。 然則英文可不可以說The board have decided.....? 答案是：可以，只是意思和has decided稍有不同。Board（董事會）、committee（委員會）、family（家庭）、audience（觀眾）、government （政府）、team（隊）、jury（陪審團）等等集合名詞 (collective noun) 做主詞的時候，可配單數或複數形式動詞。用複數，重點在於團體內不同的成員；用單數，則是把所有人當做一個單位。The jury were divided in their opinions. 是說「陪審員意見不一」，而由於代名詞用了複數形式的their，動詞更不應用was；The jury was unanimous in its decision. 則是說「陪審團一致裁定」，而由於代名詞用了單數形式的its，動詞同樣不得用were。 最後不妨談談mainland China（中國大陸），那mainland一字不是專有名詞(proper noun)，不應用大寫，正如mainland Europe（歐洲大陸）、mainland America（美洲大陸）一樣。今天不少人寫Mainland China，實在不足為奇。He lived in mainland China（他住在中國大陸）一語，mainland是形容詞(adjective)，介系詞in和China連用；假如以mainland做名詞，則須 用on: He lived on the mainland。 |
