| 如果你曾經做過生意，相信你一定遇過這樣的人，談天說地，就 是不講正題。他可能告訴你現在經濟低迷，生意真的很不好做，而且他家裡上有高堂，下面還有三歲的幼子，錢真是不好賺。說了半天，眼淚只差沒流出來了，就只 是沒有說出他的意圖，可能只是要你暫緩追他的債。遇到這情況，你也可以問他：“May I ask what you are getting at?" 「請問你到底是甚麼意思呢？」 |
| 對話 A：I wonder if you can get them done some how in a way that...... 甲：我在想，不知你們是否可以某種方式做到使它...... B：May I ask what you are getting at? 乙：請問你指的是甚麼意思呢﹖ A：Sure. All I want to know is if it´s possible to expect any reduction on these prices. 甲：可以，我最想知道的是你們再有沒有減價的餘地。 B：I´m afraid not. These are really our lowest wholesale prices. 乙：恐怕不可以了。這真的是我們最便宜的批發價了。 A：I see. 甲：我明白。 B：Actually, due to the current oil shortage,material costs have gone up incredibly, you know. 乙：事實上，由於目前的石油短缺，物料的價格上漲到一個難以置信的地步。 其實在日常生活中用“May I ask what you are getting at?" 「我可不可以請問你到底是甚麼意思呢？」已是一個非常有禮貌的說法，如果你覺得這個客人已經有點點討厭的話，你也可以問他說：“What are you trying to say?"「請問你到底想說些甚麼？」如果你已經對這個人感到不耐煩的話，你還可以問他說：“What´s your point?"「請問你的重點在那裡？」這種說法，其實已經相當不客氣了。 |

| 暗示和直言 「暗示」或「意指」，英文叫get at；I´m not sure what he´s getting at即「我不能肯定他意何所指」。一個同義的說法是drive at，例如：May I know what you are driving at?（請問你想說的是甚麼？） 有些人說話轉彎抹角，這英文稱為beat about / around the bush，直譯是「抽打叢林」。從前英國貴族出獵，會遣僕人用木棍等在叢林中四處敲打，驚起藏身其中的鳥獸以便射擊。所以，beat about / around the bush有「旁敲側擊」的意思，引伸為說話轉彎抹角，例如：Stop beating about the bush. Tell me directly what you want.（不要再轉彎抹角了，你想怎樣就直接說出來吧。）和beat about the bush相反的，是go / get straight to the point，即開門見山說出要點，例如：I had better go straight to the point: is it possible to expect any price reductions?（我還是開門見山直說吧：價錢減一點可以嗎？） 假如人家的回答是I´m afraid not（恐怕不能減了），那麼，通常你可以提出兩點請他考慮：第一，你訂的貨不少；第二，你以後還會大批訂購他們的其他產品：But this is a bulk order, and we may place similar orders for your company´s other products. 這樣，對方就可能讓步：Yes, I realize that. Well, I could give you a 2% discount.（我明白；好吧，給你2%折扣吧。） |
