| 當我們去外地旅遊時，外國人總分不清我們是中國人、日本人還 是韓國人。反之，我們遇到金頭髮的也不一定是美國人，所以該問清楚人家Where are you from?（你從那裡來？）或者可以問Where are you come from? 、What´s your nationality?（你的國籍是甚麼？）或What passport do you hold? （你拿甚麼護照？） 在中文國家要形容某人是甚麼國籍，只需在國家名後加上「人」便可，例如：中國人、日本人等，但西方國家就不同，舉例說明：I´m from China. I´m Chinese.（我來自中國，我是中國人）、I´m from Japan. I´m Japanese.（我來自日本，我是日本人）、I´m from the United States. I´m American.（我來自美國，我是美國人）、I´m from Holland. I´m Dutch.（我來自荷蘭，我是荷蘭人），遇著一些思想落後的人，你也可以開玩笑地問：Where are you from? Are you from Mars? (你從那裡來？你是從火星來的嗎?） |
| 對話 A:Dominique, you seem to have an English accent. Where are you from? 甲：多明尼，你好像有英國口音，你從那裡來？ B:I´m American. But I studied in England and France for ten years, from the age of fifthteen. 乙：我是美國人，但我從15歲開始在英國和法國留學10年。 A:Oh, that´s interesting. What did you study there? 甲：噢，很有趣呢！當時你修讀甚麼科目？ B:I got a degree in oriental studies in England and then I got my masters in business in France. 乙：我在英國取得東方文化學士學位，然後在法國完成工商管理碩士。 |

| 說國籍 你去到外國，人家問Where are you from?或Where do you come from?（你是從哪個地方來的？）你可以說：I´m from Taiwan（我是從台灣來的）或I´m Taiwanese/I´m a Taiwanese（我是台灣人）。I´m Taiwanese和I´m a Taiwanese這兩個說法有甚麼分別？ I´m Taiwanese的Taiwanese是形容詞(adjective)，I´m a Taiwanese的Taiwanese則是名詞(noun)。說籍貫或宗教，假如有形容詞和名詞可以選擇，多數會用形容詞，例如He´s English（他是英國人）、I´m Catholic（我是天主教徒）等。當然，用名詞說He´s an Englishman、I´m a Catholic也可以。 留意國籍形容詞假如以ese結尾，例如Chinese（中國的）、Portuguese（葡萄牙的）等，一般有兩個讀法：其後接名詞，第一個音節 (syllable)須重讀；不接名詞，ese的音節則須重讀，例如：It´s a CHInese temple（那是一座中國式廟宇）、The architecture is typically ChinESE（那是典型的中國建築風格）。 此外，以ese結尾的國籍名詞，單數和複數形式沒有分別，例如：I learned that from a/two Japanese（我是從一個╱兩個日本人那裡知道的）。 說地方名稱的字，習慣用大寫，但有些地方產品今天已經國際化，和那地方再無特別關係，那就不用大寫了，例如venetian blind（百葉窗簾）、french window（落地窗）、indiarubber（橡皮擦）、india ink（墨汁）、plaster of paris（熟石膏）、china（瓷器）等。 |
