| 在放假的時候，如果你不想出門，而想做幾道小菜請你的朋友和同學來家吃飯，你可怎樣開口邀請呢？你可以說："We´d like to invite you to dinner." 如果這句話的句尾並沒有加上一個特定的地點，例如凱悅飯店，就表示我要請你到我家吃飯。 |
| 對話 A：I wonder if you´re free on the evening of May 5th? 甲：請問你五月五日的晚上有空嗎？ B：Yes, I believe so. 乙：嗯，有呀。 A：Good. We´d like to invite you and Jack to dinner. 甲：好！我們想邀請你和傑克一起吃晚飯呢。 B：Oh, thank you very much. We´d be delighted. 乙：噢，非常謝謝你。我們樂意之至。 在歐美國家請人吃飯，如果是正式的聚會，他們可能會在兩個星期前打電話告訴你："We´d like to invite you to dinner." 然後再寄給你一張邀請柬，看你到時候會不會到場。 如果你的朋友已經到了你家裡喝下午茶，你想請他吃飯，則可用較平常的問法："Can you stay for dinner ?" 如果你想邀請朋友參加你的派對而不是晚飯，你可以跟他說："We´d like to invite you to our party." |

| 五月五日晚上 I wonder if you´re free on the evening of May 5th ? 是「你五月五日晚上有空嗎？」 這句話有一點值得留意：the evening之前用介系詞 (preposition) on。 我們常常看到evening和介系詞in連用，例如：He enjoys watching television in the evening. (他喜歡晚上看電視。) 究竟in、on兩個介系詞怎麼用？ 按in the evening等於「在晚上」，不說明是哪一天的晚上；假如要說明，則須用on，例如：(1) He enjoys watching television on Saturday evenings.（他喜歡星期六晚上看電視。） (2) He watched television on the evening of May 5th.（他五月五日晚上看電視。） 此外還有兩點值得留意：第一，假如日期是用on帶出而不是of， the evening之前須用in，例如He watched television in the evening on May 5th.；第二，evening之前假如用 this、that、tomorrow、yesterday、every等字，就不用介系詞，例如：I´ll see him tomorrow evening.（我明天晚上會見到他。） 最後不妨談談日期的說法和寫法。五月五日口頭上一般會說the fifth of May，美式英語也說May fifth。書面上則可寫5(th) May, 2003或May 5(th), 2003，日子之後加st、nd、rd、th等，是較舊式的寫法。有時，年月日會一律用阿拉伯數目字寫出，但這容易引起誤會，因為英式寫法是日/月/年， 美式則是月/日/年，然則6/5/2003是五月六日還是六月五日，頗難斷定。 |
